Message from Bon Koizumi

I would like to send my deepest sympathy and prayers to the victims of the Tohoku Kanto Earthquake and Tsunami.

The term ‘Tsunami’ was introduced to Japan for the first time in ‘A Living God’ ,one of the articles published in ‘Gleanings in Buddha Fields’ by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1897.
It was a story based on the fact that a lot of villagers had been saved from Tsunami, being evacuated to the higher ground because of a quick reaction by Shoya (headman) in Hiro Village (Hirokawa City), Wakayama Prefecture in 1854 when Ansei Nankai Earthquake occurred in the area.

Hearn conveyed the horror of the earthquake as well as wit and a sense of ethics of the headman to the world. As a journalist, in the lectures and newspaper articles, he also stressed the importance of crisis management in the event of natural disasters and necessity to coexist with nature with a feeling of awe, avoiding reckless deforestation for the future of Japan.
‘A Living God’ was re-written by Jozo Nakai later and appeared in the government-designated textbooks, titled ‘Inamura-no Hi’ (‘Fire in Inamura’) Since the Sumatra Earthquake in 2004, the article has been translated into more than 10 languages and utilized as a disaster prevention material in the world.
I believe Hearn on the other side is lamanting the devastation of the tsunami that just occurred.

In the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, the part of the exhibits has been changed to tsunami related materials.
