内容

Lafcadio Hearn was born in 1850 on the Greek island of Lefkada, and later abandoned by his parents, Hearn was sent to America. He is best remembered for his books about Japanese culture, especially his collections of legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. In the United States, he is also known for his writings about New Orleans, based on his decade-long stay there.

Join us on December 15th at 6:00 pm with Steve Hemme & Tom Tsuchiya as they discusses several mysteries about Lafcadio Hearn, including how he managed to end up in Japan and why he stayed there for the rest of his life. The presentation will be 45min with a 15 min Q&A afterward.

Topics of Discussion:

  • Hearn’s interest in Japan can be traced at least back to his years in Cincinnati in the 1870s.
  • Hearn, who married the daughter of a samurai and took the name Yakumo Koizumi, immersed himself in the daily life and culture of Japan as few foreigners had.
  • Hearn became such a beloved professor at the University of Tokyo that his students threatened to stage public protests against the university when a salary dispute caused Hearn to resign.
